The hallmark of a great man

Regarding the late Tun Sardon Jubir - he was proper brilliant
Posted by: engleberthumpadink

I've just finished reading the biography of a truly great man. And yet now I've finished I feel nothing but sorrow as I look at the people that run the country now.

Tun Sardon was a man of the people, ok he felt more affinity for the Malays, as he was a kampung boy himself, but the Tun Sardon Foundation that still bears his name was started to help the poor and disabled from all races, without prejudice.

This man lived and died for Malaysia, his hard work and lifetime of sacrifice produced benifits that each and every Malaysian still feels the effects of now - he was a key player in the Merdeka movement, he personally visited every single hospital in the nation and made sure they were all improved, he oversaw the construction of Stadium Merdeka, the building of the E-W highway, expansion of Port Klang and Penang port, improved telecommunications here, was the UN envoy and pushed forward the development of Penang whilst governor, as well as being involved in charity projects and visiting a different masjid every week in order to be always with the rakyat and hear their problems.

Here was a man of the people, by his own admission, a man. He came from humble kampung roots - his father worked hard and got together enough money to send him to London to study, even though Sardon was elligable for a grant. Tun Sardon worked every hour god sent as a student, then as a lawyer and after that as a politician.

He never stood there with his hand out saying, "where's my one?" he made sure that what he got was earned through hard work, long hours, sweat and campaigning. And yet, when he died, he died in debt. Why? Because he gave it all away to those who were less fortunate.

Would you believe a government minister giving it all away to the poor and needy? Hmmm, let's have a look at those so called "elected reprasentatives" who are currently driving the country off the proverbial cliff, would they give away any of their millions? Would they give away all of it?

Ha ha ha

Where have all the Tun Sardons gone? Where have all the educated politicians gone? Where has all the kindness and compassion to all races and religions gone? Where have the "elected" leaders who care about something other than their own power and pockets gone?

Will we ever see his sort again? I sincerely hope so

TUN SARDON FOUNDATION

The Tun Sardon Foundation

During his tenure as the Govenor of Penang from 1975 to 1981 the then Tuan Yang Terutama Yang Di-Pertua Negeri, Pulau Pinang, the late YAB Tun Datuk Haji Sardon bin Haji Jubir, became concerned about the poor and needy in the State during the economic downturn at that time. With the co-operation and assistance from a group of the State's prominent businessmen and community leaders, the concept to help the less fortunate in the State through a welfare foundation was established.Tun Sardon Foundation was incorporated on June 13, 1978 to carry out charitable workincluding giving relief to the poor and needy, in particular the widows and orphans, victims of fire, floods, famine or other calamity and to those in need of moral or social rehabilitation or welfare.Since incorporation, the Foundation had paid out a total of RM 2,320,086 in form of donations to charitable organisations or relief funds, study awards to first degree university students and educational grants to primary and secondary school pupils. In 1988, the Foundation gave a special donation of RM 60,000 to the Ferry Disaster Relief Fund and in 1992, a special donation of RM 8,000 to TAR College Building Fund was made. In 2000, another donation of RM 10,000 to the Penang TYT Fire Disaster Relief Fund was given. In 1991 the Foundation, under the Grants Sub-Committee Chairmanship of the late Tan Sri Dato' LohBoon Siew and now under Dato' Tan Ghim Kheng, gave educational grants to primary and secondary schools pupils with potentials but who were poor and needy. Presently 41 students have received awards and up to the year 2003, 29 students have since graduated with degrees ranging from social science to medicine.

Madhavan Nair, who served from 1975 to 1989 as aide to DAP stalwart and former Opposition Leader Lim Kit Siang, was able to closely observe parliamentarians at work and at rest. Like Yap, the MPs who made the greatest impressions on him hail from an earlier era. “I can think of two legends who may not be so well known nowadays, both of whom were single term MPs from 1969 to 1974. Hashim Gera the Parit MP from PAS was known to pepper his speeches with pantun and lengthy anecdotes. He was also known as the joget MP, which didn’t go down well with his more conservative party colleagues!

“Then there was Ng Hoe Hun who represented Taiping for the PPP. He used to come to Parliament in a Jeep, and quite often it wouldn’t start and we would have to help push-start it for him! He was also the rare one who used to stay in the Parliament tower (the iconic 17-storey building). In those days outstation MPs used to share two to a room and there were lots of ghost stories flying around!”

Other strong characters Nair recalls are former Foreign Minister Tun Ghazali Shafie and former Health Minister and Governor of Penang Tun Sardon Jubir. “People were scared of King Ghaz (as he was nicknamed). He thought nothing of giving public dressing-downs to senior officials! Tun Sardon is someone I remember as a very witty man.”
